Size for the drink. Japanese tea cups are small, so tea is sipped fresh and topped up often. Coffee cups with saucers, like the Seiryū stoneware cup and saucer, suit espresso drinks and flat whites, while mugs hold a larger morning coffee.

Ceramic or glass. Ceramic and stoneware feel warm in the hand and keep drinks hot a little longer. Glass shows off the colour of tea, coffee or water and feels light and clean on the table. Hammered and patterned glass, as on the Sayo teacup set, catches the light and hides fingerprints.

Sets and pairs. Cups sold in pairs or small sets make an easy gift. Mixing two designs in the same material keeps a tray interesting but calm.

Sake. A small carafe and cups, like the Tsuchi ceramic sake set, serves sake warm or chilled.

Care. Avoid pouring boiling water into cold glass and let cups cool before washing. Hand wash delicate glass and check each product page for dishwasher guidance.

Small cups keep tea at its best temperature and flavour, since each serving is drunk quickly and refilled from the pot. They also suit green tea and gongfu brewing, where leaves are steeped several times.

Many glass cups are made for hot tea and coffee, but check the product page for heat guidance. Warming the glass with a little hot water first helps avoid sudden temperature shock.

Small cups with saucers suit espresso, cortado and flat white. For a filter coffee or a large latte, choose a mug or a taller cup.

Pour sake into the carafe, warm it gently in a pan of hot water or chill it in the fridge, then pour into the small cups. It is customary to pour for others rather than for yourself.
