Mirrors

Start with the job. A full-length mirror for getting dressed should be at least 60 inches (150 cm) tall so you can see head to toe, like our Hoshi wave mirror or the solid wood Niwa standing mirror. Above a console, sideboard or basin, choose a mirror about two thirds the width of the furniture below it.

Frame or frameless. A wood frame adds warmth and works well against plaster or limewash walls. Frameless organic mirrors feel lighter and suit small rooms and bathrooms, where the shape does the decorating.

Placement. Hang a mirror across from or beside a window to spread daylight deeper into the room. In a hallway, a tall mirror makes a narrow space feel wider. Avoid placing one directly opposite the bed if bright reflections bother you at night.

Hanging and leaning. Heavy wood-framed mirrors should be fixed into a stud or with anchors rated for the weight. A leaning floor mirror looks relaxed, but secure the top to the wall with an anti-tip strap if you have children or pets.

LED mirrors. Backlit mirrors like Renji give soft, even light for the bathroom or a dressing area. Choose warm white for a calm evening routine.

An irregular mirror has a free-form or asymmetrical outline instead of a round, oval or rectangular one. The soft, organic shape adds movement to a wall and pairs well with natural materials, which is why it suits Japandi and wabi-sabi interiors.

Aim for a mirror about two thirds the width of the furniture below it, hung with roughly 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) between the furniture top and the mirror's lowest edge.

Yes. Leaning a floor mirror at a slight angle looks relaxed and makes a room feel larger. For safety, fix the top to the wall with an anti-tip strap, especially if you have children or pets.

Spray glass cleaner onto a soft cloth rather than directly onto the mirror, so moisture does not reach the wood. Dust the frame with a dry or lightly damp cloth.
