Tableware: guide and FAQs
How to choose dinnerware
Set or single pieces. A full set like the Kawara stoneware dinnerware set or the Aoumi reactive glaze set gives you matching plates and bowls in one go. If you already own basics, add a plate set in a second glaze and let the two sit side by side.
Plate sizes. A dinner plate of around 10 to 11 inches (25 to 28 cm) suits most main meals, while smaller side and dessert plates work for breakfast, bread and sweets. Wide-rim soup plates, like Hiro, handle pasta, curries and salads as well as soup.
Glaze and texture. Reactive and speckled glazes vary from piece to piece, which is part of their charm. Japanese plates often favour muted colours and irregular rims that frame food rather than compete with it.
Care. Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as moving a cold plate straight into a hot oven. Check each product page for dishwasher and microwave guidance, and hand wash pieces with wood or metallic details.
Serving and setting. A wooden tray, a slate board or a large serving bowl in the centre of the table ties a mixed set together.
What is the difference between stoneware and other ceramic dinnerware?
Stoneware is a type of ceramic fired at a high temperature, which makes it dense, sturdy and good for daily use. Ceramic is the broader term and also covers earthenware and porcelain.
How many pieces do I need in a dinnerware set?
Plan on at least one dinner plate, one side plate and one bowl per person you regularly cook for, plus a few extra for guests and breakages. Many households start with sets for four and add pieces over time.
Is it fine to mix different plate sets?
Yes. Keep one thing consistent, such as colour family, glaze finish or rim shape, and the table will look intentional rather than mismatched.
Why does my plate look slightly different from the photo?
Reactive, speckled and textured glazes change in the kiln, so colour, speckling and edges vary a little from piece to piece. That variation is expected and makes each plate individual.
