Pendant Lights: guide and FAQs
How to choose and hang a pendant light
Hanging height. Over a dining table or kitchen island, hang the bottom of the shade 30-36 inches (75-90 cm) above the surface. In walkways and open areas, keep at least 7 ft (213 cm) of clearance from the floor so nobody bumps into it.
Sizing. Over a dining table, a single pendant about half to two thirds the table's width looks balanced. Above a kitchen island, two or three smaller pendants spaced evenly along its length usually work better than one large one.
Woven or solid. A woven pendant light such as the Ren rattan pendant or the Asahi woven pendant casts patterned shadows and feels relaxed. A bamboo pendant light like Waka gives a similar texture with a lighter look. Paper and alabaster shades give an even, diffused glow.
Bulb colour. For dining areas and bedrooms we recommend warm 2700K bulbs, which bring out the honey tones of rattan and bamboo.
Care. Dust woven shades with a soft brush or a vacuum on low. Avoid hanging rattan or bamboo in damp spots.
How high should a pendant light hang over a dining table?
Hang the bottom of the shade about 30-36 inches (75-90 cm) above the table top. That lights the table without blocking the view across it.
How many pendant lights should go over a kitchen island?
Two pendants suit most islands up to about 6 ft long, and three suit longer islands. Space them evenly and leave about 6 inches or more between the end pendants and the island edges.
What is the difference between rattan and bamboo pendant lights?
Both are natural woven materials. Rattan is usually woven into rounder, softer shapes, while bamboo is often split into thin strips for finer, more structured shades. Both cast warm, patterned light.
What makes a pendant light Japandi?
A Japandi pendant light has a simple form, natural materials such as rattan, bamboo, paper or wood, and gives warm, softly diffused light. It should look calm whether it is switched on or off.
