Rugs: guide and FAQs
How to choose a Japandi rug
Size it to the furniture, not the room. In a living room, the rug should be wide enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to rest on it. For most sofas that means 6 x 9 ft or larger. Under a bed, let the rug extend 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) beyond each side. Under a dining table, allow about 24 inches (60 cm) beyond the table edge so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
Organic and irregular shapes. A soft, irregular outline like Fuuka or Mugi works best where the rug can be seen in full: in front of a sofa, beside a bed or in a reading corner. Treat it as a piece of art on the floor and keep the furniture around it simple.
Materials. Wool is soft, durable and naturally resists dirt, so it suits living rooms and bedrooms. Jute, like our hand-woven Genmai, brings a natural, textured look and works well in calm, lower-traffic rooms; keep it away from damp areas.
Colour. Warm whites, oat, sand and soft grey keep a room calm. A muted green or blue rug can be the one colour in an otherwise neutral space.
Underneath. A rug pad stops slipping, protects the floor and makes any rug feel softer.
What makes a rug Japandi?
Japandi rugs combine Japanese restraint with Scandinavian warmth: neutral or earthy colours, natural fibres such as wool and jute, soft texture and simple or organic shapes. They add warmth without visual noise.
What size rug do I need for my living room?
Choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on it. For most living rooms that is 6 x 9 ft (about 200 x 300 cm) or 8 x 10 ft. A rug that floats alone in the middle of the room usually looks too small.
Are irregular shaped rugs practical?
Yes. They work like any area rug, but the soft outline breaks up straight lines and looks best where the whole shape is visible, such as in front of a sofa, beside a bed or in a reading corner.
How do I care for a wool or jute rug?
Vacuum regularly without a beater bar, rotate the rug every few months for even wear, and blot spills straight away with a dry cloth. Avoid soaking jute, as water can mark natural fibres.
