Bedside. The bottom of the shade should sit roughly at chin height when you are sitting up in bed, so the light falls on your book and not in your eyes. Choose a lamp in proportion to the nightstand: it should not take up more than about a third of the surface.

Desk and console. On a desk, a shaded lamp placed to the side of your writing hand avoids shadows. On a console or sideboard, a pair of lamps gives a balanced, symmetrical look, while a single lamp feels more relaxed.
