Lighting: guide and FAQs
How to light a Japandi room
Layer your light. A calm room rarely relies on one ceiling light. Combine a pendant or chandelier for general light, a table or floor lamp for reading, and a wall light or two for a soft glow at eye level. Three or four small sources feel warmer than one bright one.
Choose warm bulbs. For living rooms and bedrooms we recommend warm 2700K bulbs. They give the golden, relaxed light that suits natural materials. Add a dimmer where you can, so the same light works for dinner and for winding down.
Let materials soften the light. Paper and linen shades, like the Awa paper pendant or the Andon linen table lamp, diffuse the bulb into an even glow. Woven rattan and bamboo cast patterned shadows on walls and ceilings.
Embrace imperfection. A wabi sabi lamp with a hand-finished, slightly irregular surface, such as the Chiyo wall light, adds texture to a room of clean lines.
Keep it simple. Pick one or two materials and repeat them across the room rather than mixing many styles.
What is Japandi lighting?
Japandi lighting blends Japanese restraint with Scandinavian warmth: simple shapes, natural materials such as paper, rattan, bamboo and wood, and soft, warm, diffused light rather than bright glare.
What colour temperature is best for a Japandi room?
We recommend warm 2700K bulbs for living rooms and bedrooms. Warm white light flatters wood, linen and plaster and keeps the room feeling relaxed in the evening.
How many light sources does a room need?
Most rooms feel best with three or more: a ceiling light for general light, a lamp for reading or tasks, and a wall light or accent lamp for atmosphere. Spread them around the room instead of lighting everything from the centre.
Can I mix different lighting materials in one room?
Yes, but keep it restrained. Repeating one or two materials, for example rattan with linen or paper with wood, looks calmer than combining many different finishes.
